Your Mountain is Waiting!

Congratulations!

Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places!

You’re off and away!
-Dr. Seuss

Summer and travel are natural companions. The long anticipated family vacation or adventure with friends is close at hand. We seem to successfully navigate the packing, the driving, the budget, the unexpected calamity with ease and return home exhausted but somehow refreshed.
Somehow, though, our professional journeys don’t always go as well. Sometimes we just stop moving forward in our careers. According to a recent Forbes magazine article, the top two reasons that people stay stuck in their careers are (1) they are afraid of change, and (2) they resist growth and maturity i.e. new skills and capabilities. The article suggests asking yourself the questions, “Have I worked smart enough to improve myself significantly over the past month?”  “Am I getting trained in skills and competencies that will advance me?”
If the answer is no, then perhaps you have entered The Waiting Place.
What is the Waiting Place? Here is how Dr. Seuss describes it in Oh, The Places You’ll Go:
“The Waiting Place is
...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.”

Perhaps you are not in the waiting place, but you have encountered one of the other travel hazards described in the book. You might be in a slump, or maybe you failed at something and are now too scared to try again, or maybe you are just overwhelmed and confused by the many roads from which to choose. Summer is a great time to get out of these places by tapping into your spirit of adventure and trying something new. Learn a new skill, explore a new career, or cultivate a new hobby. Dr. Seuss advises the kid to just keep moving forward when he comes to these hazardous places because only then can he ever arrive at the exciting, fun, and amazing places!
It is advice that we never outgrow the need to hear.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, Indeed! (98 ¾ percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

Today is your Day!
Your Mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!
